Transitional Atmospheres
Master's Project
The main idea of the project is to provide safe and comfortable transitions for human and non-human actors. It is driven from analysing the facilities in Norsborg that offer services for people with mental dissabilities and the lack of safe connections among them. In that sense, we bring the concept of “umbrella species” in order to understand that if we design for certain sector of the population then the design will be more inclusive and accessible. For that reason, we decided to understand the elderly as an umbrella species for the human actors, in order to enhance physical activity, connection to nature and comfortable paths to travel.
For the non-human actors we decided to have 3 different species endemic to Norsborg that are essential for the ecosystem in the area, for that we created uninterrupted areas of vegetation that allow safe transitions for these species. This network is worked throughout the intervention of social, natural and material layers. We worked with different strategies like speed reduction mechanisms, rest stops, nature and wayfinding information to design the network but also places of meeting between these two actors, so they can benefit from each other.
